Studying abroad demands additional qualifications. Except for school or college degree, you need to make through certain entrance exams to be able to apply for the further study in abroad. There are different types of exams based on your current academics and the country where do you want to go. Some usual entrance examination options are IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, GRE, TOEIC, etc.

As per the facts, there are more than 950 million people who are English speakers. In that group, there are more than 600 million people whose second language is English and rest of them prefer English as their first language, i.e. around 340 million. Hence you can imagine the population on earth who speak and understand English. Hence, English is one of the most crucial and important thing considered to examine someone’s intelligence in order to be able to fit into the system of the corporate and cultural environment as most of them prefer English. With IELTS result you can apply in the North American Universities, Oceania Universities or several European Universities.

Hence, there is an independent exam just to check how good your English language is. The exam is known as International English Language Testing System which is well-known as IELTS. IELTS is taken by the non-native English speakers to check their English proficiency. This test is managed by Cambridge English Level Assessment and British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia. The first exam was taken in 1989. In a year, IELTS is available 48 times. In a month it is available 4 times a month. You need to go online to apply in for IELTS. Tentatively, the cost of the exam is between US$200 – US$250. Total time taken for the exam is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.

However, there are certain benchmarks for the grades which differ from institution to institution. So, based on the college you want to get into and the course you would like to pursue, you need to score minimum grades in IELTS. There is score they give from Band – 1 to Band – 9. Higher the bands, better the results.

For clearing this examination, there is no minimum score required. Your score in an IELTS examination is valid for two years. In case you apply after the 24 months, you need to prove that you have worked hard enough to maintain your English language skills.

Test Formats


There are four parts of an IELTS exam namely reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Listening:

In listening, you the applicant has got to listen to four recordings of English speakers and answer the question based on the same. Your ability to comprehend the development of ideas from the recording will be assessed. Based on your answers the assessors will check how you are able to focus on the context and crux of the recording. This section would take 30 minutes and 4 recordings.

The 1st Recording

will be a usual conversation between two people.

The 2nd Recording

will be a monologue. Example – Speech of a politician

The 3rd Recording

will be a conversation between four people in the training content. i.e.: A teacher and student discussing a topic.

The 4th Recording

can be a monologue on an academic subject. Example – a lecture in a university


Reading:

Reading takes 60 minutes of the exam. There will be 40 questions in this section where your ability of reading and understanding simultaneously will be observed. Gist reading, skimming, detailing, comprehending logical argument in a paragraph, opinions of the writers, etc. Is included in this segment.

There is IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training test inside this module. The previous consists of long passages with factual information written descriptively. It is the part where students take major time for marking the answer. The latter includes the material you face in general English speaking environment like a small paragraph from a newspaper, advertisement, magazine, etc.

Writing:

Writing is the third part of the exam and it takes 60 minutes. There is again Academic and General Test too in writing module.

There two tasks in both Academic and General test.


In Academic

Test 1: will be given factual information like graph, tables, diagrams and told to explain and summarize the whole scenario in your own words.

Task 2: You will be told to write an essay and convey your point of view formally regarding the situation.

In General

Task 1: You will be given a scenario where you are told to write a formal, semi-formal or personal letter explaining the situation.

Task 2: There will be a scenario and you will be asked to write an essay. This time, the essay can be in personal tone.

The speaking module is unique in all the four modules. It takes between 11 to 14 minutes. Because rest of the modules are designed where a student has to interact with the computer while taking the test. However, in speaking, there is a one-to-one interview with the examiner. In that interview, a student’s speaking ability is judged as the student is speaking. The whole session is also recorded for the purpose of observation, grades, and monitoring the applicant.
